Kevin has released Love Walked In, a CD in the tradition of jazz trios bringing together piano, bass and drums.
Drummer Gordon Rytmeister, bass player Dave Pudney and Hunt are long-standing musical colleagues. "In this recording we quickly established a three-way interplay, both musically and personally, " Kevin says.
The trio has been recorded with few microphones, straight onto tape, to achieve a live-gig sound.
"There is no luxury of multi-tracking here — it is the way jazz was recorded in the 50s," says Kevin.
Love Walked In was born from requests from audiences for Kevin to follow up on his successful Kevin Hunt plays JS Bach CD and record some of his favourite jazz works.
"I am influenced and awed by the artistry of musicians such as Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Bud Powell, and George Shearing, and Love Walked In is an opportunity to explore these influences and pay homage to these great composers and players," he says.
In 1987 and more recently in 2002, Kevin experienced what he describes as the heart of jazz piano by watching Barry Harris play in New York City. "Harris has performed with Miles Davis, Sony Stitt, and Cannonball Adderley, and is unquestionably the foremost exponent of the music of [Bud]Powell and ... [Thelonious] Monk".*
When Harris plays you feel his music is giving everyone in the room a great big hug. He has inspired me twice now to be more devoted to jazz-music making and teaching," Kevin says.
